NOT-FOR-PROFIT VS. REGISTERED CHARITY
Canadian PKU & Allied Disorders Inc. is a registered Not-For-Profit Corporation, but NOT a Registered Charity. This means that we cannot provide tax receipts for donations or purchases, and we are often asked why.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) had rules about what activities Registered Charities can engage in. Specifically, Registered Charities could not use more than 10% of their resources (financial assets, staff, volunteers, Directors, etc.) for political purposes – defined as the purpose to retain, oppose or change the law, policy or decision of any level of government in Canada or a foreign country. Since CanPKU+ spent considerable resources advocating for better access of PKU treatments for all Canadians, we could not be a Registered Charity, and thus could not provide tax receipts.
In recent years the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has changed this ruling. CanPKU+ is actively working on efforts to obtain a registered charity status. Please stay tuned
